Our Mission

In 2023, CHOICES Institute of Women’s Health, formerly known as CHOICES Global Institute of Healing and Education (CGI),  is embarking on a transformative journey to reshape and strengthen our institute in response to the urgent demand for abortion care and reproductive health services precipitated by the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs decision which invalidated Roe, ending legal abortion nationwide and allowing states to impose draconian restrictions. Our renewed CGI, now CHOICES Institute of Women’s Health, is dedicated to enhanced outreach and empowerment, fostering active support and collaboration to champion a more equitable and inclusive society. We are committed to restoring fundamental human and civil rights while enhancing health outcomes for the communities we serve, exemplifying our unwavering dedication to women’s health and rights in the face of challenging times.

Empowering Women and Girls Worldwide

CHOICES Institute of Women’s Health was founded by Merle Hoffman in 2015 to help address the global need for education and services relating to women’s and girls’ health, well-being, and ability to thrive and achieve their potential as full human beings. We develop, sponsor, and promote educational and training efforts, services, and programs in the U.S.A. and internationally.

While our primary focus is developing and supporting health education and care initiatives in the United States, we recognize our international responsibility to women, girls and people of all sexes and genders in other countries as well, who are affected by what happens in this country through U.S. government policies as well as social and cultural influences. Historically, CHOICES Women’s Medical Center has been looked to as a positive example of providing services, education and information that promotes health, well-being and empowerment to help people, particularly those who are underserved, live lives of value and meaning to themselves and others. Our efforts to reach and influence an international audience will continue with the growth of the Institute.

Meet Founder,
Merle Hoffman

Merle Hoffman has been at the forefront of the reproductive freedom movement since the 1970s. Three years before the Supreme Court legalized abortion through Roe v. Wade, she helped to establish one of the United States’ first abortion centers in Flushing, Queens, and later went on to found CHOICES Women’s Medical Center, one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive women’s medical facilities. For the last five decades, Hoffman has been a steadfast warrior and fierce advocate for every woman’s right to choose when and whether or not to be a mother.

A Note About Our Use of Language: CHOICES understands and respects that not every person with the capacity for pregnancy identifies as a woman. We respect each individual’s gender identity, expression, and experience, and desire to be helpful and compassionate to all who need information about abortion or support.  As an expression of this concern, CHOICES initiated the first Trans Health Care Program in New York State in 2016. While we do make an effort to use gender-inclusive language (person/people/they/them/patient) throughout our website, we do of course use woman/women/girls. We do so in order to acknowledge the long history of gender discrimination targeting women, the specialized health care that we provide, our experience with hundreds of thousands of women using our services and the biological reality that only people with uteruses are biologically capable of become pregnant and carrying a fetus.
